The Holy Week (or Semana Santa) is coming fast. We have already been in the forty days before Easter for a while and the atmosphere is visibly growing. Little ceremonies are sporadically taking place around the most important colonial cities of Guatemala and in no time we’ll all be getting goosebumps of the typical suits, music and statues going through the streets.
But where are you going to celebrate Holy Week? You might want to go to Antigua, the city by far most associated with the Easter festivities. Since Ash Wednesday, the festivities are going on and the climax will be on Easter Friday when countless people get the honor of carrying holy images around the beautiful town. Before, locals take the time to make a artistic carpet over which the procession will walk.
Can’t you go to Antigua or are the hotels fully booked? There are obviously more places in Guatemala were the Holy Week is celebrated, in fact, the whole country will be in a huge buzz. Quetzaltenango might be an obvious second choice to see the innumerous processions meandering the streets, but don’t count out any other of the cities in Guatemala. Ask locals what the town you’re in has to offer during the week, you might be surprised.
So, where to experience the Holy Week? Well, just being in Guatemala will do, but if you really want to treat yourself to something great, do consider going to Antigua if you can still find accommodation or obviously come to Quetzaltenango. Coming soon will be our list of activities that will take place during the Holy Week, activities that might have you deviate to our beloved Xela.
